Hampton Bays School District continued its tradition of honoring veterans by conducting a flag ceremony at the elementary school on Dec. 6, in recognition of the service of Jack Capone.

Mr. Capone, an Army vet from the 60th Engineer Combat Battalion in the 35th Infantry Division, graduated from Hampton Bays in 1942. After serving his country, he returned to Hampton Bays and began working with his father as a carpenter at Capone & Son. He and his wife, Rosemary, were married in 1947 and raised one son, John. Mr. Capone was a member of the Hampton Bays Fire Department for 19 years, and served as chief for a period of time.

During the ceremony, members of the Hamptons Bays Jazz Choir led the Pledge of Allegiance and national anthem. Several students read from their VFW Voice of Democracy essays on "Why I'm Optimistic About America's Future," while others read Christmas cards they had written to veterans.

Also present at the flag ceremony were past Veteran of the Month honorees, members of the American Legion Hand-Aldrich Post 924, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5350 and elected officials.
