Hampton Bays Elementary School second-graders, with clip boards in hand, combed the beach at the Shinnecock Inlet, hunting for various sea creatures as part of an annual field trip on May 11.

During the trip, led by Ranger Eric Powers from Your Connection to Nature of Smithtown, the students learned about the diversity of beach life through a variety of activities, including a seaside beach scavenger hunt.

The second-graders were taught to identify a number of sea creatures from moon snails to muscles, to oysters and full feathers. They also learned more about the birds that make their home along the area’s waterways, such as the osprey.
