During a school assembly on Jan. 15, four lucky third-graders learned they were selected as winners in the annual Hampton Bays Lions Club guide dog naming contest and were each the recipients of a $25 prize.

As part of the initiative, the building’s third-graders were asked to name four guide dogs sponsored by the Lions Club through fundraising efforts. The winning names – Buddy, Rocky, Soldier and Sparky – were chosen by Camilo Betancur, Christopher Clinton, Valeria Gamboa and Caren Amador Vallecillos.

In the near future, these dogs will help to assist returning soldiers or, following a training program with the Smithtown Guide Dog Foundation, individuals with visual impairments.
