Ten Math Fair medal winners from the 2010-2011 school year, five from last year’s seventh-grade class and five from the eighth-grade class, were honored during a recent Hampton Bays Board of Education meeting.

The seventh-grade winners, now in the eighth grade at Hampton Bays Middle School, included Erin Link, Alicia Golyski, Brook Von Bartheld, Gabby Morea and Alexis Fotopoulos. The eighth-grade winners, now freshmen at Hampton Bays High School, included Mackenzie Engeldrum, Taylor Dunn, Rebecca Harris, Sara Juidice (diff. spelling in last paragraph) and Mary Kelly Hilton.

According to Hampton Bays Middle School Principal Dennis Schug, the winners were the first-ever Hampton Bays students to participate in the Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair. During the summer break, the first round was held at Suffolk County Community College and the finals were held at Hofstra University. The competition included each student presenting a six-page paper on a math subject and then giving a 15-minute presentation on their chosen topic to a panel of judges.

“They are remarkable role models,” Mr. Schug said.

Bronze medal winners from the seventh grade included Brook Von Bartheld, Gabby Morea and Alexis Fotopolous, and from the eighth grade, Sara Jiudice and Mary Kelly Hilton.

Silver medal winners from the seventh grade included Erin Link and Alicia Golyski, and from the eighth grade, Mackenzie Engeldrum, Taylor Dunn and Rebecca Harris.
