An international scientific journal, Toxics, has published an article on research conducted by Hampton Bays High School science research student Caroline Oakland.

“This is a huge accomplishment,” said Hampton Bays science research teacher Dr. Stephanie Forsberg. “Authors in this journal are typically adult, Ph.D. researchers in the field.”

In the article, Caroline discusses the research she conducted over the past four years with the assistance of her mentor, Dr. Jaymie Meliker of Stony Brook University. The research explores county-level radon and incidents of female thyroid cancer in Iowa, New Jersey and Wisconsin.

When not working on her research project, Caroline swims competitively with the East Hampton Hurricanes Swim Team, plays lacrosse, and actively participates in her school’s Leo and Key clubs. Although currently undecided on which college she will attend, she plans to study political science in the fall.

The Hampton Bays School District extends its congratulations to Caroline Oakland for her extraordinary accomplishment.
