Three students, one from each school in the district, received January “Student of the Month” honors during the Hampton Bays School Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, February 9.

Kindergartener Jhon Salazar, eighth-grader Eric Downs and junior Pawel Golyski each received a plaque and commendations from their respective principals.

Jhon Salazar, who enjoys writing and playing on his Wii, is a converted New Orleans Saints fan (since they won the Super Bowl!), Mr. Meyer reported. But teacher Mary Beth Motz, who came to the meeting to sing Jhon’s praises, had many compliments for her young charge. “He’s got a lot of gusto and optimism,” Ms. Motz said. “Jhon is a very dynamic group leader and he has a fantastic outlook.”

Eric Downs is a seasoned “Student of the Month,” having been recognized as an elementary student. According to Mr. Clemensen, Eric, who enjoys science class the most and won a spot on the ACC Team, is a leader who received a unanimous nine votes for the award this time around. “He’s a pleasure in class and is a role model to other students,” he said, adding that Eric really likes “how everybody treats one another at the middle school.”

Pawel Golyski is “proof you can do it all,” Mr. Richardt proudly proclaimed. The busy student is on the Student Council, Thespian Society, a student athlete and is working toward earning Eagle Scout status. “We’re very proud of Pawel,” Mr. Richardt said.
