First-graders at Hampton Bays are a multicultural bunch, especially after learning about the holiday traditions of different cultures for the annual “Holidays Around the World” celebration.

The event, held on Dec. 14 at the elementary school, provided the children with opportunities to not only acquire knowledge about different lands, but to also shine, via song, in front of family and friends. The seven first-grade classes were each given a country or continent to study and then showed off what they learned during a convocation filled with singing presentations.

This year, Ms. Hutchison’s class represented Israel and sang “The Dreidel Song,” Ms. Barker’s class represented Germany and sang “O Christmas Tree,” Ms. Thorn’s class represented Costa Rica and sang “Con Mi Burrito Sabanero,” Ms. Loper’s class represented Australia and sang an Australian version of “Jingle Bells,” Ms. Poremba’s class represented Italy and sang “Dominick the Donkey,” Ms. Thristino’s class represented Sweden and sang “Silent Night” and Ms. Biscardi’s class represented Mexico and sang “Feliz Navidad.”

For the annual first-grade “Holidays Around the World” luncheon, provided by the parents of the first-graders, foods included: latkes (Israel), pretzels (Germany), empanadas (Costa Rica), barbecue (Australia), ziti (Italy), Swedish meatballs (Sweden) and tacos (Mexico).
