Future Business Leaders Presented with Big Check

Now in its second year, the Future Business Leaders of America at Hampton Bays High School is continuing on with a healthy balance sheet, thanks to the support of local businesses and groups.

On Thursday, January 12, members of the club received a $1,000 donation from Kenneth G. Pagano of the Hampton Bays-based Allstate Insurance Company. Those in attendance to accept the donation included advisors Andrew and Eleni Fotopoulos, President Dan Martel, Treasurer Lexi Giannone and members Harry Fotopoulos, Shanna Healey, Megan Walker and Taylor Diffley.

Mr. Pagano, an avid supporter of the group who also donated last year, said that he is really proud of the “hands-on approach to the future” that club members have taken with the FBLA, and that by donating, he is merely showing his support for the community and a “great group of kids.”

Several local businesses and merchants have donated to the group, including Scotto’s Pork Store, Pooltastic, Buckley’s Inn Between, Skidmore’s Sports and Styles, and many more. Proceeds collected this year will go toward sending Hampton Bays FBLA members on an overnight field trip to Manhattan at the end of February. Scheduled stops on the trip will include tours of the Financial District, the Federal Reserve, the NYU Business Center and the musical How to Succeed in Business on Broadway.

“This [donation] opens up more opportunities to expand the club and explore the world of business,” said Ms. Giannone on the day of the check presentation.

Athletes Recognized at Hampton Bays

January was the month for celebrating achievements in sports at Hampton Bays Middle School and High School.

Among the athletic events highlighted during the month was the fifth annual “Spirit Week” at both the middle school and high school, with games in a variety of sports—including basketball, volleyball and wrestling—held each day of the week from January 9-13. A school colors contest was held that week, with points awarded for wearing purple and white. The winning class, the seniors, received a $500 donation from the Hampton Bays Booster Club and was awarded the 2012 Championship Trophy.

The Hampton Bays Booster Club also held a “Winter Fest Scholarship Fundraiser” at Oakland’s Restaurant on Saturday, January 28. Almost $6,000 was raised at the event.

Also in January, the varsity field hockey team was selected by the Field Hockey Officials Association for the Marilyn Cross Sportsmanship Award. The team was the only one selected for the honor, according to Athletic Director Drew Walker.

Senior Andrew Morris was recognized by Suffolk County and is a proud recipient of the Golden 11 Award. He was one of only eleven senior football players in the county recognized by the National Football Foundation for excellence in the classroom and on the field.

December events were also recognized this month by the school. Seniors Lexi Giannone and Perry Friscia were acknowledged as the Hampton Bays Suffolk Zone Award winners for their excellence in physical education, as well as for their leadership, strong academics and community service endeavors. The Suffolk Zone Award Dinner was held on December 7.

At the very end of December, the annual Hampton Bays Varsity Basketball Coaches vs. Cancer Holiday Tournament was held. The two-day fundraising event was held on December 27 and 28 at the high school. Approximately $7,000 was raised at the tournament and donated to the American Cancer Society.

Creating College Awareness

Making sure that students are aware of all positive life, career and educational choices is a primary goal for administrators and staff at Hampton Bays Middle School.

According to Middle School Principal Dennis Schug, College Awareness Day is a very eye-opening and rewarding experience for the middle school students. The college and career readiness experience for eighth graders was held on Wednesday, January 4, and included talks with college-age former Hampton Bays students and children of the district’s staff.

For this year’s College Awareness Day, students from Colgate, Olin College of Engineering, Wentworth Institute of Technology, SUNY Oneonta, SUNY Geneseo, St. John’s University, MIT, SUNY Plattsburgh, Suffolk County Community College and Boston College came and discussed their experiences with members of the eighth-grade class. Everything from how to choose the right school, to the typical day of a college student, to how to pay for education was discussed during the fourth annual event.

“We are making that investment in the long term,” Mr. Schug said during a sit-down talk with school counselor Laurie O’Halloran in early January. “This college and career readiness piece is a constant conversation about real-world demands.”

“In this day and age, having options for higher education is really important for our students, and the sooner they know those options, the better,” Ms. O’Halloran added.

Making sure that students at the middle school are aware of post-high school educational options is key, Mr. Schug said. He reported that he and his staff are committed to presenting those opportunities wherever possible. Currently, each class, from grades 5 through 8, incorporates a college visit during an annual field trip.

Students of the Month Honored

December Students of the Month were recognized during the Hampton Bays Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, January 10.

Three students, one from the elementary school, one from the middle school and one from the high school, received plaques and words of commendation from their respective principals during the meeting. Fourth grader Sam Billingham, eighth grader Isaac Brown and senior Perry Friscia were each recognized for their exemplary scholarship and leadership.

Sam was joined at the ceremony by first-grade teacher Joan Barker and music teacher Steve Piliero. Hampton Bays Elementary School Principal Marc Meyer said that Sam is “off to an outstanding start” this school year and noted that “the way he gets along with students is second to none.” When he grows up, Sam wants to play baseball for the Mets and be a professional musician, Mr. Meyer said, adding that Sam’s favorite song is “Hey Soul Sister” by Train.

Isaac, a member of the Big 12 team, is “an absolute superstar and role model in the classroom” according to Hampton Bays Middle School Principal Dennis Schug. According to Mr. Schug, Isaac is passionate about social studies and is a triple threat when it comes to athletics, as he plays soccer, basketball and baseball. The Boston Red Sox fan plans on attending Boston University and becoming an architect.

Perry came straight to the meeting from the basketball court, where he started off the scoring in a winning game against Mattituck. The National Honor Society member is a “model of good character and conduct,” Hampton Bays High School Principal Christopher Richardt noted, adding that Perry has already been accepted to Roger Williams University, Siena College, St. Bonaventure University and Saint Leo University. He plans to study business and finance.

Honoring Our Veteran, Ms. Marilouise Kelly

The American Flag flies in the Hampton Bays Public Schools this month for our neighbor and local hero, Marilouise Kelly.

Marilouise was born in Flushing, New York and grew up in Elmhurst Queens with her two siblings, Paula and Bobby. Marilouise attended Mount Sinai School of Nursing and graduated with honors as a Registered Nurse. Marilouise volunteered for the Army Nurse Corps and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant at Fort Totten, NY. She was assigned to care for solders returning from combat in North Africa. In 1943, she was sent to England to work at the 231 Station Hospital, 60 miles north of London. The number of casualties and those injured in the “Battle of the Bulge” was enormous and they were treated at that hospital.
Marilouise married Gene Kelly when he returned from combat in Okinawa after having served with the 536 ATB. They married on April 25, 1946 in St. Bartholomew’s Church and were blessed with seven children by 1947 - 3 boys and 4 girls. She attended Hunter College and graduated with a Degree in Education. In 1970 she became an accomplished assistant professor of the faculty of Nassau Community College School of Nursing. There, she contributed as an author to textbooks that forever changed the lives of many nursing students and colleagues.

Marilouise remains an active member of the Hampton Bays Senior Center and is also a respected member of the American Legion and VFW. She attended the opening of the WWII monument and is honored in the Women’s Memorial for America’s Military Women in Washington D.C.

The Hampton Bays Public Schools thanks Marilouise Kelly for her service and is proud to recognize her by flying a flag in her honor for the entire month of January at the Hampton Bays Elementary School!

Guest Chefs

Introducing healthy food into school lunches just got a little easier at Hampton Bays Middle School. The reason: the Guest Chef program.

The monthly program, which began in November, features a local guest chef who visits the school to prepare healthy and delicious meals for the students. In December, Chef Charles from Villa Paul dropped by and served up Italian specialties, including pasta fagiole, Caesar salad, sausage and beef lasagna, grilled eggplant parmesan and apple cobbler.

“We’ve got a local celebrity chef making delicious food. It’s a home run,” Hampton Bays District Superintendent Lars Clemensen said while enjoying lunch prepared by Chef Charles. “We’re getting kids to eat healthy. It’s a good day in the school.”

According to Hampton Bays District Business Administrator Larry Luce, the program is all about introducing kids to healthy meals made from scratch, with new items that students may not have had before. “Getting kids to eat eggplant, wow!” he said of Chef Charles’s visit.

All the food for the program is supplied by the school, and the chef volunteers his or her time, according to Mr. Luce. There is a slight additional food expense for the program, which the district pays at no additional cost to the students.

Josephine was nominated for Student of the Month by her teacher, Barbara Ferucci, who assisted Hampton Bays Elementary School Principal Marc Meyer in presenting her student with her plaque. Also joining the educators were Josephine’s little brothers, Nate and Leo. “She’s so special that Ms. Ferucci insisted on being here tonight,” Mr. Meyer said, adding that Josephine loves literature, singing and dancing. Her goal is to travel around the world as a professional singer and dancer, Mr. Meyer said.

Christina is “an absolute pleasure to be around” and “oozes enthusiasm,” according to Hampton Bays Middle School Principal Dennis Schug. “She’s so well-rounded it’s incredible,” he added. Her goal is to become a veterinarian’s assistant when she turns 14, Mr. Schug reported.

Mr. Richardt said that he received the nomination from Ms. Russo just as he was signing Taylor’s commendation for making the honor roll. Taylor is an “outstanding young man and a three-sport athlete,” Mr. Richardt said, and he hopes to attend Penn State University and go on to become a sports commentator.

Honoring December's Local Hero

Students from Hampton Bays continued their efforts to honor local veterans by conducting a flag ceremony on Friday, December 2, at the elementary school in honor of James Papandrea, a recipient of the Purple Heart and member of the United States Marine Corps division the “Fighting Fourth” during World War II. The flag will fly in recognition of his service through the month of December.

Directly following the flag ceremony, a reception was held at the middle school that featured a presentation of gifts, essays and a light brunch, courtesy of the Kiwanis Builders Club kids. Prior to Friday, students from the fifth grade decorated the middle school hallways in honor of Mr. Papandrea, who has donated his Purple Heart medal for display in the middle school library during the month of December.

Those in attendance at the event included: fifth and sixth-grade students and their teachers, November honoree Walter Flaherty, members of the American Legion Hand-Aldrich Post 924, the Kiwanis Club of Southampton, the Hampton Bays Middle School PTO, Hampton Bays Superintendent Lars Clemensen, Hampton Bays Middle School Principal Dennis Schug, and elected officials—New York State Assemblyman Fred W. Mr. Papandrea, who lives in Hampton Bays with his wife, Rosemary, also earned the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He served his country in three major beach invasions as a member of the “demolition squad,” which hit the beaches on the first day of invasions.

Leaders Among Leaders

For the second year in a row, Hampton Bays High School brought the largest delegation to the National Association of Student Councils Leadership Experience and Development (LEAD) conference, held from November 11-13 in New Mexico. Only five of the 39 Hampton Bays High School Student Council members were unable to attend the conference, which attracted approximately 600 student leaders from all around the United States.

While at the conference, the students attended leadership workshops and learned from world-renowned youth leadership experts, including Ed Gerety, Scott Greenberg and Andy Thibodeau. In addition to honing their leadership skills, the students were also able to visit the University of New Mexico, attend a Division 1 volleyball game, and take a ride in a hot air balloon—a memorably uplifting experience for all!

“This was a great leadership experience for our Student Council officers,” said Hampton Bays High School Principal Chris Richardt of the trip.

The cost of the trip was paid for mostly through fundraising efforts, according to Student Council advisor Eleni Fotopoulos.

Food Drive

Hampton Bays Elementary School students started celebrating Thanksgiving early this year by participating in a “Turkey Box” food drive. Each class at the elementary school collected non-perishable food items that they put in boxes decorated for Thanksgiving. The boxes were donated to local families in need on Monday, November 21.

The students began gathering the food and designing their “Turkey Boxes” in early November. On Friday, November 18, the boxes were judged by Elementary School Vice Principal Richard Triandafils, who determined that Mr. DellaSparanza’s second-grade class earned top honors with a cornucopia box made with real straw. Mr. D. had been substitute teaching for Ms. Stahlhut, who has since returned from maternity leave. Second-place honors went to Ms. Poremba’s first-grade class for a box featuring a three-dimensional cartoon turkey, complete with feathers. Tied for third place were Ms. Eaton’s and Ms. Foster’s kindergarten classes, both of which made boxes representing the Pilgrims.

“These boxes are very ingenuous,” Mr. Triandafils said as he surveyed the competition on Friday. “I love all the energy and effort put into this. It really speaks to the holiday season.”

The project was sponsored by the Hampton Bays PTA, according to Vice President Kim Grimes, who noted that each needy family will also receive a turkey for the holiday.

PTA member Natalie Robinson said that the “Turkey Box” food drive is a great way to teach young children about community service.

“This shows them that they can help people in need. It’s a good lesson for our kids,” she said.

Hat Days

A growing number of Hampton Bays Middle School students and staff plan on breaking the rules and getting away with it on Wednesdays in November. That’s because Wednesdays have been deemed “Hat Days” by Principal Dennis Schug and sixth-grade teacher and Kiwanis Builders Club advisor Marianne Pendlebury.

Hat Days are all about raising money for the Heavenly Hats organization, a non-profit that collects and distributes new hats to people battling hair loss from cancer, alopecia and other illnesses. The fundraising is being overseen by members of the Kiwanis-sponsored Hampton Bays Middle School Builders Club, Ms. Pendlebury reported. Proceeds from Hat Days will go toward shipping costs for Heavenly Hats.

Hampton Bays School District has a “no hats” policy normally, but those who wish to show their Heavenly Hats support will donate $1 to the organization via one of the three collection containers in the middle school and will be allowed to keep their head covering on all day on Wednesdays in November. Students and staff alike enthusiastically donned all sorts of unusual head apparel on the first Hat Day on November 9. Jester caps, cowboy hats, visors and even a “Rasta” hat with faux dreadlocks were spotted in the hallways, offices and classrooms.

“It’s normally against the rules, but this is a good cause,” Mr. Schug said on Wednesday as he put on his own black and purple Hampton Bays baseball cap.

A New Tradition Begins

Students from the third and fourth grades at Hampton Bays Elementary School gathered together on Thursday, November 10, to honor local veterans and local heroes. The guest of honor was Walter Flaherty, who served in the United States Army’s 741st Tank Battalion and survived D-Day at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944. For his service, Mr. Flaherty received the American Service Medal, the European/African/Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and a Distinguished Unit Badge. A flag will be flown in the front of the elementary school in his honor for the next 30 days.

“Raising a flag is our small way of saying thank you,” said Hampton Bays District Superintendent Lars Clemensen.

The Veterans Day Luncheon, an annual gathering, celebrated the contributions of American servicemen and women. Among the events of the day presented by the students were the Pledge of Allegiance, the singing of “God Bless America,” the reading of Mr. Flaherty’s biography, Patriot Pen readings, Veterans Day poetry readings, presentations by the K-Kids officers, student essay readings, and the singing of marches from each branch of the military—Coast Guard, Marines, Air Force, Navy and Army. The students also created handmade placemats for each of the veterans to enjoy during lunch.

The event also included a flag ceremony by the American Legion Color Guard, a luncheon prepared by the PTA and parent volunteers, and visits by Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst and Southampton Town Councilman Chris Nuzzi.

Going forward, a flag will be flown every 30 days in recognition of a local veteran’s commitment to service, according to Mr. Clemensen.

Ghosts, ghouls, goblins, witches, zombies, princesses and superheroes reigned supreme in Hampton Bays on Monday, October 31, when the elementary school hosted its annual Costume Parade around the bus loop in front of the school.

It was standing room only outside for family and friends on Monday as students in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first and second grades walked the parade loop, dressed in their Halloween best. Third and fourth graders also dressed up to watch the parade.

The parade began at 2:15 p.m. and lasted approximately 20 minutes as the young students took a few turns around the loop to show off their costumes. Many teachers also got into the spirit of things by dressing up with their classes.

According to Hampton Bays High School ESL teacher Robin Spielman, the four students have since been deemed proficient in English and passed the English Regents last year. Ms. Spielman began teaching the students when they were in middle school. Brenda and Jussara are now in her College Prep English course.

Recognized for Service to the Community

As Tropical Storm Irene was leaving her mark across Long Island, the staff members of the Hampton Bays School District were leaving an indelible mark on their community. During the storm, when many families were displaced from their homes, Hampton Bays High School was utilized as a Red Cross Evacuation Shelter. In addition to the necessary emergency supplies such as cots, dried food, and blankets, members of the district’s administration set up a playroom for children and a room where adults could stay informed of the latest weather updates. With help from the community, teachers, and school staff, as well as the local police department, fire department and ambulance company - who worked tirelessly for Hampton Bays residents to ensure their safety - they were able to feed all of the people in the shelter by arranging for generous donations from King Kullen and Kriegs Bakery.

To recognize the district for its efforts, Legislator Jay Schneiderman (I-Montauk), along with his fellow Suffolk County legislators, honored the Hampton Bays High School, under the leadership of Superintendent Lars Clemensen, for its efforts in Hurricane Irene. “The shelter at the Hampton Bays High School is a shining example of the amazing things that can be done when a community comes together to help each other in a time of need,” stated Legislator Schneiderman.

Baymen Welcomed Back to School

The rain came down hard, but that didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits on the first day of the 2011-2012 school year, Wednesday, September 7, at Hampton Bays Elementary School.

Some kids arrived with their parents, who walked up donning rain slickers and carrying umbrellas as they brought their little ones, clad in Dora the Explorer and lots of other cartoon-themed wet weather gear; while other children were dropped off or took the bus in for the big day.

The smallest children - those in the incoming kindergarten classes - were the first off the buses. Luckily, most of the youngest students were quickly ferried into the school in between bouts of drenching rain. They were followed by the seasoned first through fourth-grade students, who made their entrances quickly through the downpour in a precise and orderly fashion.

Getting the first day down to a science is a top priority every year for the district, and this year, despite the wet weather, everything went smoothly for students, teachers, parents and administrators. Less than 15 minutes after the first bus rolled up, the elementary school students were sitting in their comfortable and dry classrooms, excited to begin another great school year at Hampton Bays.

The World Awaits for the Class of 2011

Family and friends packed the tent behind Hampton Bays High School on Saturday, June 25, to watch the commencement exercises for the 116 members of the Class of 2011.

Highlights of the ceremony, which began at 11 a.m., included remarks by Commencement Speaker Dr. Shaun L. McKay, President of Suffolk County Community College; a special diploma presentation to the parents of Joey Marino, who was killed by a drunk driver in 2009; and stirring speeches by Hampton Bays Superintendent Lars Clemensen, Valedictorian Pawel Golyski and Salutatorian Deborah Carlson.

Dr. McKay told the members of the graduating class that the graduation milestone was only the beginning of what should be a lifetime of achievements. He admonished the students to live a life of integrity and to be true to themselves.

“Do not allow someone else to define what you will be today and tomorrow,” he said.

Mr. Clemensen, who presided over his first graduation as Superintendent, spoke of how proud he was of this particular class of accomplished students. But he joked that he had one last task for them.

“On this last day of high school, I’m assigning you homework,” he said. “Commit to the idea of growing and serving, always.”

Retirees Honored, Tenure Awarded at Hampton Bays

The end of school each June signifies the closing of the door on another year, but it also marks a series of beginnings. This year, new beginnings are at hand for Mike Terry and George Leeman, who have retired, and for seven teachers who received tenure during a recent Board of Education meeting.

Mr. Terry, the school’s audio visual technician, has worked for the district since 1976.
Intergenerational Game Day

Students in James Arnone’s third-grade class enjoyed a real opportunity to connect with their elders on Thursday, May 26, when they stopped by the Southampton Town Senior Center in Hampton Bays to spend time with dozens of residents.

While visiting, the children and the seniors had a blast as they participated together in a variety of games and activities, including the card game Uno, dice game LRC (Left, Right, Center), checkers, puzzles, making cards for veterans, and even Wii Bowling.

The one hour and fifteen minute visit filled with “Intergenerational Games” was a terrific experience for students and seniors alike, and one that Mr. Arnone said he hopes to repeat.

“It’s wonderful for the students to see what the seniors are doing here. It’s a good chance to interact with each other,” he said. “It would be great as an annual event that bridges the gap between the seniors of the community and the students of Hampton Bays.”

Remarking on the visit, particularly the children and seniors bowling together on the Wii gaming system, Pam Giacoia, Director of Senior Services for Southampton Town, said that keeping seniors engaged is a top priority.

“We don’t let any grass grow under the seniors’ feet,” she laughed.

Hampton Bays Budget Passes Handily

Voters in the Hampton Bays School District gave a resounding “Yes!” in support of the $44.9 million budget for the 2011/2012 school year.

The final votes were tallied just after 9 p.m. as a crowd anxiously awaited the results in the Hampton Bays Middle School gymnasium. The results: Proposition 1, the budget, passed with 977 yes votes and 598 no votes. Proposition 2, regarding repairs on the grounds, passed with 1039 yes votes and 526 no votes. Proposition 3, regarding the capital reserve fund, passed with 976 yes votes and 529 no votes. Additionally, Dorothy Capuano, who ran unnopposed to fill George Leeman’s soon-to-be vacant spot on the Hampton Bays School Board, received 1030 votes.

District Superintendent Lars Clemensen and School Board President Doug Oakland quickly gave statements thanking the commuity for its support.

“This is a resounding commitment to our schools by our community. In a tough economy like this, it takes a lot for taxpayers to make a decision in support of the budget and I'm extremely grateful for that showing,” Mr. Clemensen said.

“Thank you to the community in trusting the Board of Education, the Superintendent, Lars Clemensen, and [Hampton Bays Business Administrator] Larry Luce,” Mr. Oakland said.

As for the results of her uncontested run, Ms. Capuano said, “I’m very excited to be part of the Hampton Bays School Board. I hope I can bring wonderful things to my term.”

The fourth annual “Community Pride Day” on Saturday, May 14, was a little different this year. Of course, the regular fun, games, food and vendors were there. But this time, a special groundbreaking celebration for the Good Ground Community Garden was also part of the mix.

The annual celebration, sponsored by the Hampton Bays Education Foundation, Parent Teacher Associations and the Hampton Bays Union Free School District, began with a 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m. The event officially kicked off at 10:30 a.m. with the fun and games opening and the Good Ground Community Garden groundbreaking, which was named by third graders Eric Casale and Andrew Smith.

“State of the Schools Report”

Hampton Bays District Superintendent Lars Clemensen and select administrators delivered a “State of the Schools Report” during a Community Summit meeting on the evening of Tuesday, May 10.

To commence the event, which was attended by approximately fifty community members, Mr. Clemensen gave an overview of the district that focused on the difficult financial environment and the means by which the district has worked to attain the best solution for next year’s budget.

“This year, we are facing an uprecedented challenge, but it’s also an unprecedented opportunity to shine,” Mr. Clemensen said. He also commented on the impending retirement of Hampton Bays Board of Education member and former Board President George Leeman, whom he thanked for his 12 years of service on the Board. “He’s a big reason we have this middle school.”

Elementary School Principal Mark Meyer took the podium to discuss academic programs, the importance of character education, and community involvement. “The thing I’m most proud of is our involvement with the veterans’ organizations, which promotes a respect for the past and the building of relationships within the community,” he said.

Middle School Principal Dennis Schug talked about academic opportunities for student success, community service opportunities, promoting leadership and creating an environment for long-range growth. “We are looking to grow and expand our success. Our academics are at the forefront of what we’re trying to accomplish here,” he said. “We’re here to learn how to be successful in life...to promote lifelong learning.”

High School Principal Christopher Richardt discussed community service, co-curricular programs and academics. “Our job is to create college and career readiness. Ultimately that’s the goal. We have a powerful academic program that addresses the needs of our students,” he said.

Other speakers included: Denise Sullivan, Assistant to the Superintendent for Curriculum; Mark Pagano, Assistant to the Superintendent for Student Services; John Moran, Director of Safety and Transportation; and Drew Walker, Director of Athletics, Health and Physical Education. Ms. Sullivan discussed the continuous improvement programs in place for teachers and administrators. Mr. Pagano focused on the Life Skills Academy program for students. Mr. Moran reported on “the logistics involved in moving 1,500 children every day.” And Mr. Walker shared how athletic programs promote healthy lifestyles and team building, leading to the development of “well-rounded individuals.”

Business Offical Larry Luce addressed the attendees with a brief yet informative presentation on the “lowest budget increase in ten years” and the factors affecting the district’s financial status. He also emphasized the necessity of community support in raising children.

“It takes a community to build a child. I think that’s more true in Hampton Bays than anywhere else,” he said, adding that he was proud of the hamlet members who continue to strive to encourage such well-rounded Hampton Bays students. “To make the schools what they are, to create that lifelong love of learning; Hampton Bays does a heck of a job!”

Students Create “Kites for a Cure”

Hampton Bays Middle School students in Kathy Dayton’s art classes have been hard at work making kites for the annual Southampton Chamber of Commerce “Kites for a Cure” fundraiser.

The 50 nylon kites decorated by students, which were provided by the Kites for a Cure Foundation, will be on display at the Hampton Bays Middle School from Tuesday, May 17 through Thursday, May 19, and will then be delivered to the Southampton Chamber of Commerce for the annual kite fly for Uniting Against Lung Cancer. The family kite fly benefitting lung cancer research will be held on Saturday, May 28, at Coopers Beach in Southampton at 4 p.m.

In creating the kites, students were inspired by the artwork of Henri Matisse, Vincent Van Gogh, Piet Mondrian, Keith Haring, and Georgia O’Keeffe, among others. The kites were colored in using opaque paint markers. The pieces of kite artwork, which will also hang in Southampton shopfronts prior to the actual fly, will be for sale through donation for the fundraising event.

The art class project stemmed from a districtwide initiative to foster community awareness and the concept of giving back, according to Ms. Dayton. So far this year, middle school students have also participated in a town-wide Earth Day cleanup, created Houses for Haiti lapel pins, and raised funds for breast cancer awareness.

But her number one asset is her great attitude, according to Mr. Schug, who commented “See this smile? Get used to it, because it never leaves her face.”

Dahian was nominated by teacher Robin Spielman, who said that Dahian, whom she has had in class for four great years, is a great representative and leader for other students. “We’re all very proud of her and I’ll miss her when she graduates,” Ms. Spielman said. According to High School Principal Chris Richardt, she is a “model for hard work and perseverance.” Dahian is involved in cheerleading and the Kung Fu club and she plans on attending Suffolk County Community College to major in international business, Mr. Richardt reported.

TRANSPORTATION SAFETY ALERT

We recently received correspondence from the State Education Department informing all school districts to take extra safety precautions around or near bus stops and routes due to information they have acquired. To quote the Department, "a threatening email from an unknown email account to members of the media and various state officials references threats of violence in state office buildings, against the state legislature, and a specific reference to school buses."

Our Transportation and Security Departments have coordinated efforts to respond to this information and have enhanced their existing pre- and post-inspection routines for all bus transit. Montauk Bus Company has discussed this information with all drivers and our on-campus Security Team remains informed and active.

This posting is to inform you, and not alarm you. The Hampton Bays Schools continues to place the highest priority on the safety of its students and staff.

Baybots Named Top Seeded Rookie at FIRST

Congratulations to the Hampton Bays Robotics Team #3474 who took home the Top Seeded Rookie award in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island Regional Competition at Hofstra University on March 26, where they competed against 47 teams from across Long Island.

Six weeks prior to the competition, the students were faced with the challenge of designing and building an original 130-pound robot from a kit provided by FIRST. The kit was used to ensure that students were competing in accordance with standard game rules and that all schools competed at the same level. Earlier this year, the Robotics team received a $6,500 grant from NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Agency) to help fund the building of their robot.

The three-day event is a showcase of the abilities of our future engineers, programmers and electricians. Additionally, senior Pawel Golyski was awarded the Hampton Bays MVP award. Team advisors Matt Balistreri and Ed Baumann could not be more proud of HB’s first entry into this prestigious competition.

“Cheer for a Cure” Raises $6,000 for Charities

The Hampton Bays Varsity Cheerleaders raised $6,000 in one night during their “Cheer for a Cure” fundraising event in February. The money raised during the event, which also included cheer teams from other local schools, will benefit the Cohen Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island.

The inspiration for “Cheer for a Cure” came during football season when seniors Marlee Riebenfeld, Emily Davis, Deb Carlin and Steph Akten--in response to an idea put forth by the Booster Club--came up with the event an opportunity to promote community service in a fun, non-competitive way. Their coach, Katie Miedema, and the rest of the squad quickly came on board.

The money was raised in $5 increments for general admission to the “Cheer for a Cure” event, as well as from donations via gift certificates from local stores. Additionally, donations of food, cleaning supplies and household goods were also collected.

“We wanted to give back to the community,” Deb Carlin explained during the Hampton Bays School Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, March 8, as she and her fellow cheerleaders presented a check to Christina Oliverio of the Ronald McDonald House. “This mini-showcase was also about showing that we love the other cheerleaders, not like they’re the competition.”

Ms. Oliverio said that she was grateful not only for the donation, but also for the girls’ inspirational efforts. “What wonderful role models,” she said.

February Students of the Month Honored

Three students, one from the elementary school, one from the middle school and one from the high school, received February “Student of the Month” honors during the Hampton Bays School Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, March 8.

Fourth grader Maryrose O’Connell, eighth grader Alexandra Peterson and senior Robert King each received a plaque and words of praise from their respective principals.

Maryrose, who was nominated by her teacher Denise DeRosa, is an “absolutely outstanding” student, according to Elementary School Principal Marc Meyer. He also reported that she is a “huge reader” who especially loves the “Wimpy Kid” series. Maryrose also enjoys gymnastics and ice skating and her favorite color is pink. She hopes to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology and to one day design dresses, handbags and shoes, according to Mr. Meyer.

According to Middle School Principal Dennis Schug, “Alexandra, also known as Alex, also known as ‘The Doctor’ has a very creative mind.” He added that she excels in her visual arts and music classes and is getting ready for her star turn as the Tin Man in the school production of “The Wizard of Oz.” Alex is also a voracious reader and is currently into the “Percy Jackson” series. Her aspirations after school include either being a Supreme Court Justice or a teacher, “both noble professions,” Mr. Schug said.

Robert, who was nominated by his accounting teacher, Andy Fotopoulos, is a high honor roll student and has been the varsity football team’s quarterback for the last three years, according to High School Principal Chris Richardt. The talented athlete/scholar is “leaning toward” SUNY Westbury and hopes to play baseball there, Mr. Richardt said. After college, Robert plans on pursuing a career in accounting or another math-based field.

Hampton Bays Students Prepare For College Selection

Educating students and preparing them for the world outside of school is a primary directive of administrators at Hampton Bays, but helping them to make decisions about continuing their education beyond high school is also a big priority. As part of that goal, providing students and their families with as much information as possible on choosing a college was the main topic of discussion on Thursday, March 10.

Led by NA Consultants President Nicholas Amato, the evening’s discussion focused on “16 Things to Ponder When Choosing a College.” Mr. Amato, who has over 30 years experience in the educational and college counseling fields, stressed that no matter the rank of a school, not all universities are created equal when it comes to meeting the needs of individual students. He talked about which types of colleges would best suit the needs of different types of students.

Approximately 70 people, including Hampton Bays High School students and their families, came to the talk, which included information on finding a supportive campus environment; exploring enriching educational experiences, academics and active learning; and student/faculty interaction. Mr. Amato also provided handouts on “What to Look for in a Perfect College” and “A Pocket Guide to Choosing a College.”

Hampton Bays High Schoolers Discover Ways to “Be the Change”

The fourth annual Hampton Bays “Challenge Day” was held on Tuesday, March 1, at the high school, and as expected, it was an emotional day for many.

The purpose of “Challenge Day” is about finding common ground, making peace, healing, making amends and igniting passion for service and leadership. Another major component of the annual event is to create a safe environment where adults and youth can join hands and feel accepted, loved and celebrated.

Under the direction of physical education and health teacher Jake Davidson, the program has been going strong at Hampton Bays and is now in its fourth year. The theme for this year’s program was “Be the Change.” Mr. Davidson said that it is his goal that every student has the opportunity to participate in “Challenge Day” before graduating from Hampton Bays.

Celebrating Black History

Throughout the month of February, students at Hampton Bays Elementary School honored significant figures and events, past and present, in African American history.

To celebrate Black History month, students in fourth grade accessed the A&E Television Network Interactive Black History website. As a group, the class read about the origins of Black History Month. During their computer classes, students had an opportunity to enter the site, explore a timeline of black history, and read some important facts. They also tested their knowledge with interactive games like the “Quoting Greatness” quiz, “Who Am I” photos, and even a crossword puzzle.

During music, physical education, library and LOTE (Languages Other Than English) classes, teachers used the website with their students to explore famous Black Americans. Groups viewed short videos and read the biographies of various musicians, athletes, writers and activists. Posters created by students with facts and photos of a famous African American of their choice are displayed on all of the special areas on bulletin boards.

Hampton Bays Raises Funds for Haiti

More than halfway through a year-long fundraising effort, Hampton Bays Middle School students have already raised over $3,000 to help reconstruct the homes of Haiti, according to visual art teacher Kathy Dayton. The “Haiti Houses” project, which originated in Florida, has been taken upon by Hampton Bays Middle School art class students who have created “Haiti House” lapel pins with recycled materials to raise money for those in need.

For the project, each of the 450 students in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth-grade art classes has been called upon by Ms. Dayton to create five sellable pins, which are being sold for $5 each. The brightly colored, hand-crafted artisan lapel pins are for sale at school district events and at the retail store Fandango in Hampton Bays. All proceeds will benefit the reconstruction of homes in Haiti.

According to Ms. Dayton, the “Haiti Houses” project combines three valuable lessons for the students: art, marketing and charity. The idea of children helping children resonated with her, she said, adding that she is thrilled to be leading a project that aids those in need through the power of art.

“I’m really proud of the kids,” she said. “And our goal is to raise $4,000 by the end of the school year we are going to do it!”

Hampton Bays Elementary Celebrates Chinese New Year

Colorful dragons and a few rabbits roamed the halls of the Hampton Bays Elementary School on Friday, February 11, to the delight of all. But not to worry, there was no actual wildlife at the school - it was just the kindergarteners putting on a Chinese New Year parade.

In celebration of the Chinese New Year (this year was the Year of the Rabbit) the young students donned colorful garb, created more than a few cardboard-and-streamer Chinese dragons, and walked a parade route through the hallways of the school. Red was the dominant color of the celebration, as it signifies life and prosperity and is often worn during celebrations in China.

The actual date of the 2011 Chinese New Year was February 3. Unlike the January 1st New Year celebrated in America and other countries, the holiday in China has a different date each year. And in China, animals are used to signify each New Year: the rabbit symbolizes graciousness, good manners, sound counsel, kindness and sensitivity to beauty; 2010 was the year of the mighty and ferocious tiger.

Following the annual tradition in Hampton Bays, students in the rest of the elementary grades lined the halls to enjoy the colorful and joyous presentations by each kindergarten class.

Hampton Bays Fourth Graders Learn About Long Island Agriculture

New York Farm Bureau Board Members Heather Quinlan and Matt Pendleton recently visited Hampton Bays Elementary School to teach the fourth-grade classes about where food comes from.

According to Mr. Pendleton, the visit was about making sure the students were “aware of agriculture in the local area and the bigger picture.” He said that he and his fellow board member wanted to impress the concepts of “where food comes from” upon the students.

A short video, produced by the New York Farm Bureau, was shown to the children first. It included information on some of Long Island’s more prolific growers--such as potatoes, grapes, apples, lettuce and sod—as well as some of the animals that the East End is known for—chickens, ducks, buffalo and horses.

Afterward, Ms. Quinlan and Mr. Pendleton quizzed the kids on the information they had just learned before opening up for questions. The Farm Bureau Board Members also educated the students about other types of East End products, including viticulture- and aquaculture-related products. The children also received a “Color Your Way from A to Z in Agriculture” coloring book, courtesy of the Farm Bureau.

Hampton Bays High School students have busy lives, but not too busy to make time to teach their younger counterparts at the Hampton Bays Elementary School about the world of reading.

Each Thursday, for a six-week period, a group of high school students visits the Hampton Bays first-grade classrooms for live storytime reading. According to the first-grade teachers, the kids really look forward to the visit and ask all day if the older students are coming to read.

“They really love it,” first-grade teacher Janis Poremba said.

The weekly visits serve many purposes: they reinforce a connection between the students in the community; they provide mentoring opportunities; and they emphasize the importance of reading and learning for both groups of students.

The combined efforts accounted for over 800 items of food for the Hampton Bays Food Pantry, 194 pairs of new socks for the "Socks for the Homeless" campaign, and $295 for the future purchase of additional socks.

The Harvest Games is an event that helps students gain an understanding of the importance of working together toward a common goal. It also builds in students a spirit of teamwork and cooperation in contributing to the community.

Hampton Bays Students Take “The Challenge”

Five students from Hampton Bays High School competed in MSG Varsity’s Tri-State area academic quiz show, “The Challenge,” on Friday, November 12. Representing the high school were Alexandra Pandolfo, Pawel Golyski, James Tran, Deborah Carlin and alternate Jesse Eaton.

The quiz show challenges the teams, made up of four-members and one alternate, with increasingly difficult questions during the half-hour competition. The show is divided into three rounds that include multiple-choice questions, a lightning round in which teams try to answer 10 questions in 60 seconds, and a final round, during which teams can answer questions freely, but risk losing 10 points for incorrect answers.

The competition was neck-and-neck the entire game as Hampton Bays students competed against Islip High School. With a final score of 245-240, the Baymen advanced to the second-round competition. The show will air on MSG Varsity, Channel 14 on Cablevision, in late January.

On Tuesday, November 9, Hampton Bays High School Student Council organized their first Mix it Up at Lunch Day for their fellow students. Mix it Up is a national campaign to improve intergroup relations, reduce prejudice and build inclusive learning communities. “During Mix it Up Day, we asked our students to break down the walls of social separation,” said Eleni Fotopoulos, co-advisor of the Student Council. “The Student Council encouraged students to sit in different seats with different groups of people during their lunch period. By moving their seats, they took steps to end the cliques and social routines. They were able to speak to new people and possibly forge new friendships.”

October Students of the Month Honored at Hampton Bays

Three students, one from the elementary school, one from the middle school and one from the high school, received October “Student of the Month” honors during the Hampton Bays School Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, November 9.

Third grader Jack Gilbert, sixth-grader Reilly Gwinn, and high school junior Vanessa Alvarez each received a plaque and words of praise from their respective principals.

Jack was nominated for “Student of the Month” by his teacher Richard Berglin for his citizenship and leadership, according to Elementary School Principal Marc Meyer. Jack is a member of the student council and K-Kids and plays in the local PAL football league. His favorite subjects are math and physical education. His career goal, Mr. Meyer jokingly shared, is to “protect Tom Brady as a member of the New England Patriots.”

According to Middle School Principal Dennis Schug, “Reilly is a special kid, a natural leader and a hard worker.” He also said that Reilly is a model student who is “humble, works like crazy, and does her best every single day.” She loves science class and is “tenacious” on the soccer field, Mr. Schug added.

High School Principal Christopher Richardt reported that Vanessa is such a committed student that she was worried about missing her SAT prep class while picking up her “Student of the Month” honor. Vanessa is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, SADD and the Key Club. After graduation she plans to become a school psychologist, Mr. Richardt said.

American Heroes Honored at Hampton Bays

More than 60 American servicemen and servicewomen, plus Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst, enjoyed the annual “Veterans and Local Heroes Luncheon” at Hampton Bays Elementary School on Wednesday, November 10.

The annual luncheon event to honor the brave men and women who serve their country in the United States Military and their community as emergency personnel was organized by the fourth-grade class, their parents, and members of the Hampton Bays Parent Teacher Association. In celebration of the local veterans and heroes in attendance, members of the fourth-grade class drew large flags, which lined the walls of the cafetorium, and patriotic placemats for each table setting.

Before a hearty lunch was served (donated by parents of the fourth-graders), a soloist sang “God Bless America,” and the K-Kids class officers for the third and fourth grade recited poems and read their own compositions, as did representatives of each fourth-grade class.

The most emotional moment of the luncheon came when music teacher Steve Piliero led the students in rousing renditions of service fight songs for the Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Navy and Marines.

“The children were very excited to know that you were coming today,” said fourth-grade teacher Amy McNamara, who played a large role in organizing the event. “They wanted to show their appreciation to you for your service to this country.”

Hampton Bays Homecoming

The Hampton Bays Baymen soundly trounced the McGann-Mercy Monarchs during the Homecoming game on Saturday, October 23. Hampton Bays scored 55 points against Riverhead-based Mercy, who scored 6 points.

Earlier in the day on Saturday, representatives from the four high school classes, as well as members of the middle school cheerleading squads and football teams, participated in the annual Hampton Bays Homecoming Parade. The theme this year was “Mount Olympus,” and the parade route travelled from the United Methodist Church on Montauk Highway to the high school on Argonne Road.

The day seemed to be tailor-made for the gods themselves as the sun shone down on the players and the packed stands full of fans. The good weather was particularly appreciated this year, as last year’s rain cancelled the annual parade festivities.

“These are the best conditions for homecoming that I can remember,” said Hampton Bays Student Council co-advisor Eleni Fotopoulos. “What a beautiful day!”

Hampton Bays Elementary Students Give Thanks for Reading Wall

Dozens of K-Kids members showed up to the Hampton Bays Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, October 12, to show their appreciation to the Southampton Kiwanis Club for donating the bricks and labor to create a “Reading Wall” at the school.

Kiwanis President Lorri Schneider was on hand at the meeting on behalf of the club to receive a special plaque of appreciation from the students, who showed up in light blue K-Kids tee-shirts alongside their K-Kids advisors, Joan Moran and Barbara Ferucci.

Though they were not in attendance at the meeting, Kiwanis member Bruce Peterson and Seven Sons Landscaping owner Mike Ruddy were also singled out for their impressive efforts in making the “Reading Wall” a reality.

“They donated the bricks, the stones, and the work. Brick by brick they built it,” K-Kids’ Ms. Moran said as she expressed her appreciation for the donation.

The “Reading Wall” took about a week and a half to complete and was built in the middle of the extended heat wave in August, Ms. Moran said. Currently students and their teachers are able to enjoy reading in the area, which includes a ledge to sit on and “dedication bricks” purchased by members of the Hampton Bays community. Future plans for the “Reading Wall” and courtyard at the elementary school include landscaping and raised flower beds.

New Business Club Gets Off to a Great Start

The Future Business Leaders of America club started only a few weeks ago at Hampton Bays High School, but great things have already begun to happen for the group and its membership of approximately 60 students.

The club, which is led by advisors Andrew and Eleni Fotopoulos, and Student President and Vice President Conor Press and Dan Martel, has already raised just over $2,000 since the school year began. This amount includes a $500 donation from Kenneth G. Pagano of the Allstate Insurance Company in Hampton Bays. Mr. Pagano, who is an avid supporter of school and community programs, said that the donation is part of his company’s “Allstate Foundation Fund,” which supports the success of students.

The donations have been rolling in due to an ambitious “ask” letter campaign, which is linking donations to $150 Gold Level and $50 Line Sponsor ads for space on a 2010-2011 Hampton Bays High School sports calendar poster that the club is producing. Proceeds collected will go toward sending Hampton Bays members to an upcoming national Future Business Leaders of America conference.

“We were trying to determine what to support this year when the letter came into our office,” Mr. Pagano said on Thursday morning, shortly after handing over a $500 check to FBLA President and Founding Member Conor Press, a Hampton Bays senior. “It was perfect timing.”
Mr. Press, who plans on majoring in business management in college next year, said that he founded the club after a positive sit-down meeting with Hampton Bays High School Principal Christopher Richardt and Mr. Fotopoulos.

“This will provide students with the tools they need to cultivate their business interests,” he said. Mr. Fotopoulos said that the success of the group has already exceeded his expectations. “Mr. Richardt came to me and asked me to start the club,” he stated. “I never thought it would take off like this.”

Approximately 30 members of the club travelled to Malloy College in Nassau County on Friday, October 15, for a regional FBLA conference.

September Students of the Month Honored at Hampton Bays

Four students, one from the elementary school, one from the middle school and two from the high school, received September “Student of the Month” honors during the Hampton Bays School Board of Education meeting on October 12.

Fourth grader Jared Strecker, fifth grader Matthew Zbikowski, junior Amanda Sanabria and sophomore Jie-Lu “Lulu” Zhou each received a plaque and words of praise from their respective principals.

Jared was nominated for “Student of the Month” recognition by his teacher, Ms. Ferguson, for his “outstanding character,” according to Elementary School Principal Marc Meyer. Jared is one of the “go-to guys” that students in his class look up to, he added. His favorite subjects in school are math, physical education and computers. He also leads his team as quarterback for PAL football and plays catcher on his baseball team. Mr. Meyer said that Jared has expressed interest in moving to Paris to become a chef some day.

Not only is Matthew a true leader, according to Middle School Principal Dennis Schug, he is also a “real trouper” for attending the school board meeting on Tuesday after having four teeth pulled. The fifth grader was also lauded for his curiosity as well as his excellence in his favorite subjects, reading and social studies. Matthew plans on working for Lego Studios when he grows up, Mr. Schug said, but he’s not certain if he wants to settle in California or Denmark.

According to High School Principal Christopher Richardt, Amanda is a “truly academically gifted” student who is “absolutely outstanding.” Amanda, who plans on attending Brigham Young University after graduating school next year, has received several perfect and near-perfect advanced test scores, Mr. Richardt noted. She is interested in a career in either music or medicine.

As for Lulu, she is an “academic powerhouse” Mr. Richardt said. He reported her final grades last year to be “100, 100, 100, 94, 100, 100, 100.” Her gifts do not end in the classroom, according to Mr. Richardt, who noted that Lulu also plays tennis and is a member of SADD and the Key Club, and is a great example for her fellow students because she is “always doing the right thing.”

Hampton Bays Third Graders Benefit from Book Drop

Stephen Matlin of the Southampton Kiwanis Club dropped by Hampton Bays Elementary School on Thursday, September 30, to bestow the gift of knowledge to the entire third-grade class. During an annual “Book Drop” gathering, Mr. Matlin gave copies of “A Student’s Dictionary” to each of the 125 students, plus the third-grade teachers and Elementary School Principal Mark Meyer, on behalf of the Southampton Kiwanis.

The dictionary drop was part of a national Kiwanis program “The Dictionary Project,” which encourages children to seek out knowledge. During the gathering, the third graders learned that they are now eligible for the K-Kids Club at the school, a group that performs a number of community-centered assistance programs.

Mr. Meyers encouraged the children to participate in giving back to the community in whatever way they could. He stressed that service to the community is a vital part of leaning and being an exemplary Hampton Bays student and resident.

“We should all be learning how to give back, just like how the Kiwanis do,” he said. “That’s always how the group works.”

The Kiwanis Club is an international organization founded in 1915 that serves communities in more than 70 countries.

Kids Stock the House

Five days into the 2010-2011 school year, Hampton Bays students are already standing out and being recognized for their good works.

During the September Board of Education meeting, several students were acknowledged for giving back to the community. Among them were seniors Tarrin Joslin and Stephen Dunn, who, along with Southampton student Robert Porco, raised money and supplies for the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island; and fifth grader Mackenzie Tyler who raised money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Wearing “Kids Stock the House” tee shirts, Ms. Joslin and Mr. Dunn (along with Mr. Porco and Ronald McDonald representative Christine Olivero) explained how they raised more than $15,500 and in excess of 1,000 “wish list” items for the Ronald McDonald House. The students, who began collecting money and items such as “towers of tuna, oodles of noodles” and diapers back in March, set up collection areas at local businesses such as the 7-Eleven, the Golden Pear Café in Southampton, and several Riverhead Building Supply locations.

The students were honored for their efforts at the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park on August 12 and received proclamations from U.S. Representative Steve Israel.

Ms. Tyler, who sold jewelry to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, was also recognized at the meeting. She was recently honored with a proclamation issued by Suffolk County Legislator Jay Schneiderman.

The 2010 “Battle of the Books” Hampton Bays Team was recognized for achievement during the Hampton Bays Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, September 14. Over the summertime break, the team participated in a Suffolk County Library-sponsored reading contest and earned high honors for its efforts.

The team, which consisted of ninth grader Daniella Greene, eighth graders Emma Harris, Alex Peterson and Olivia Terry, and seventh graders Katarina Ogris and Robert Scott, won-first place honors during an afternoon session of competition and third-place overall out of 36 Suffolk County competing teams, according to co-leader/coach and Hampton Bays Public Library youth librarian Stephen T. Burg. “We are so proud of the how hard the team worked and how well they did,” Mr. Burg said.

Hampton Bays Middle School Principal Dennis Schug praised the team and coaches. “It was great to see challenging programs offered through our local library that are geared toward keeping our kids engaged, particularly during the summer months,” he said. “It’s equally rewarding to see our middle school students rising to the challenge and meeting success.”

School is in Session

Wednesday, September 8 marked the first day of the 2010-2011 school year. It was a day of excitement for all Hampton Bays students, especially for the younger kids at the elementary school.

There were mostly smiles, a few tears, and plenty of pictures and videos taken as the children arrived on campus. Some arrived on foot, others by car and several took the bus. Regardless of their transportation, the kids were ready to learn as they rushed into the halls of the Hampton Bays Elementary School.

Getting the kindergarteners acclimated took top priority this morning as drivers and teachers assisted children off the school buses and into their classrooms. Students from first through fourth grade congregated in front of the school, grouped off by their grade with signs.

Overall, the first-day process went smoothly and the children were gathered inside and ready to start a new school year by the time of the first bell.

“This is the day they get everything down,” one of the school crossing guards remarked as the first buses rolled into the parking lot. “In a few days, it will be old hat.”

Hampton Bays Ready for the 2010-2011 School Year Start

Administrators are prepared and all systems are go for the 2010-2011 school year, according to Hampton Bays District Superintendent Lars Clemensen.

This school year is a big one for building and promoting growth within the district Mr. Clemensen said, adding that the loss of so many faculty members at the end of last year provided a rare opportunity for the district.

“There are not many opportunities to rebuild 10 percent of your staff,” he said. “But that’s what we have done this year due to the sheer number of teachers retiring.”

New teachers Scott Garafola, Adrienne Postiglione, Teresa Strano and Kevin O’Toole were welcomed during the August 10 Board of Education meeting, as was new Elementary School Assistant Principal Richard Triandafils.

During his Superintendent’s Report, Mr. Clemensen broached the subject of his “2015 Plan,” a five-year strategic plan for the district.

“This is the time to set goals for what kind of district we’ll become,” he said. “And during an administrative retreat this week, we’re going to set measurable goals for each of the next five years.”

The results of the “2015 Plan” discussions will be shared at the September Board of Education meeting, Mr. Clemensen reported.

Other projects discussed at the August Board of Education meeting included the additional athletic field at the high school, which will be completed by the middle of next month and be ready for play in the spring, according to Athletic Director Drew Walker. Also, the gymnasium floor at the high school has been refurbished, and should be completed within the next two weeks, according to Board of Education member Warren Booth, who is on the Athletic Subcommittee.

Additional items on the agenda at the August meeting included discussion about the Code of Conduct, Attendance Policy, Internet Safety Policy and Purchasing Policy. With the exception of the Attendance Policy, amendments were proposed for each of the policies. An official vote will be held on the changes during the September Board of Education meeting.

During the meeting, Assistant to the Superintendent for Curriculum Denise Sullivan also gave a presentation on how Hampton Bays will work to better prepare students for the future. Faced with changing test criteria for the Grade 3 through 8 Assessments, Ms. Sullivan reported that she and the faculty are working on how to best get and keep Hampton Bays students on track for next year’s tests. Voicing her frustration at how the state’s test changes affected the students’ scores (which were basically in line with last year, though the new grading system appears to show marked decline), she nonetheless vowed to make sure that all students would be prepared for “advanced proficiency.”

“We’ve got the same kids, same tests, same teachers; they just changed the rules of the game,” she said of the assessment results. “We can wring our hands at the drop or we can dig in and fight for proficiency, not passing and failing, but more advanced proficiency.”

Ms. Sullivan reported that plans are already in place to properly diagnose and prescribe what individual students will need to succeed: The Waterford Reading program will be utilized for children up to the second grade; there will be universal screening three times a year for children up to the ninth grade; a new reading teacher’s assistant and a new reading teacher have been hired by the district; and staff will continue to receive opportunities for professional development.

Hampton Bays Graduates Class of 2010

It was an exciting and emotional day in the hamlet of Hampton Bays on Saturday, June 26, as another class of Hampton Bays seniors turned their tassels and became alumni during the annual High School Commencement Exercises.

It was a day of bittersweet celebration for students, family and faculty, especially for District Superintendent Joanne Loewenthal, who participated in her last graduation ceremony before retiring. “This is the end of high school, but all of you know that today is a beginning,” she told the Class of 2010, adding that she was “graduating” with them as she handed the symbolic mace over to incoming District Superintendent Lars Clemensen. “Your handprints will be on my heart.”

Upon accepting his new role, Mr. Clemensen said, “I’m struck by the importance of this day. I accept this mace humbly, and with deep gratitude to Joanne Loewenthal.”

Commencement Speaker Peter Cunningham, the Assistant Secretary of Education for the United States Department of Education, received a standing ovation for his stirring, personal and sometimes funny speech about finding passion in life. “President Obama wants to have the most educated workforce by the end of this decade. Promise yourselves that you won’t give up, I know you can make it,” he said. “You have to find something you’re passionate about.” He then joked that he hoped someone in the graduating class was passionate about finding a way to plug an oil leak.

Other speakers, who also received standing ovations at the ceremony, included 2010 Class President Monica O’Connor, Salutatorian Marcus Shams and Valedictorian Maraya Ferreira.

Ms. O’Connor told her fellow graduates, “We have to take the responsibility to make the most of our lives.” She then thanked everyone for “the most exciting, hilarious and interesting four years of hell of my life.”

Mr. Shams, who plans to be a doctor, kept the crowd laughing throughout his speech. “I’d like to thank the teachers for the important things like teaching us how to sleep sitting up and how to ace a report even though we’ve never read the book,” he joked. “Now I’m going to hand the mic back to ‘the man, AKA big brother,’” he said, referring to High School Principal Chris Richardt.
Ms. Ferreira, who wants to be a high school physical education teacher, quipped, “How am I going to follow that?” as she followed Mr. Shams’s crowd-pleasing talk. The message of her talk was inspirational. “Above all, be good and love others as you love yourself,” she said.

After discussing how many students will be preparing for life, some for jobs that have not yet even been created, Mr. Richardt presented the Class of 2010 with these final words, “Have fun; life is meant to be enjoyed.”

May and June Students of the Month Honored

Six students, two from each school in the district, were recognized at the Tuesday, June 8, Hampton Bays School Board of Education meeting. Those student leaders—Andrew Torrez and Alyssa Brandes from the elementary school, Kevin Quintero and Taylor Dunn from the middle school, and Lie-Lu Zhou and Elizabeth Ouellette from the high school—received “Student of the Month” honors for the months of May and June.

First grader Andrew Torrez, eighth grader Kevin Quintero and sophomore Lie-Lu Zhou were named the May “Students of the Month.” Kindergartener Alyssa Brandes, seventh grader Taylor Dunn and senior Elizabeth Ouellette were named June “Students of the Month.”

Andrew Torrez’s teachers rave about him, Elementary School Principal Marc Meyer reported, though he noted that the young student said that he cannot wait for summer because ‘I need the rest.’” According to Mr. Meyer, Andrew’s dream is to become a pro NASCAR driver.

Kevin Quintero has been a high honor roll student for the past three periods and will likely make it for the last period of the year, according to Middle School Principal Lars Clemensen. Kevin is active in band, baseball and soccer. He told Mr. Clemensen that one of his favorite activities this school year was the social studies trip to Washington, D.C., during which he said that he and his classmates were able to “take the museum out of the book and into life.”

Lie-Lu Zhou, the high school “Student of the Month” for May was unable to attend the Board of Education meeting.

Alyssa Brandes was chosen as the June “Student of the Month” for the Elementary School because of her citizenship, her leadership abilities and because she is an excellent role model, Mr. Meyer reported. He also remarked that Alyssa, who wants to work in the medical field when she grows up, is a huge fan of singer Taylor Swift—so much so that she “is wearing the cd out.”

Middle school June “Student of the Month” Taylor Dunn is a “very busy girl,” according to Mr. Clemensen. She is a Presidential Honor Student, a student council member, a dancer, a chorus singer (and organizer of the Hampton Harmonizers), and also plays softball and basketball. Her plans are to become a teacher.

Elizabeth Ouellette, the June “Student of the Month” for the high school, is very active in school and extracurricular activities, Mr. Richard reported. She is the managing editor of the school newspaper, the president of the thespian society and is a three-sport athlete. Elizabeth will attend Suffolk Community College in the fall.

Fifth-Graders Learn About the Underground Railroad

Fifth grade students in Joan Crowley’s class enjoyed experiential learning about the Underground Railroad on Thursday, June 3. The Underground Railroad experience capped off a segment on the Civil War that the students have recently learned about in Ms. Crowley’s class.

Though slavery is a serious subject, the kids were able to learn a bit about the slaves’ long journeys to freedom in a fun way, while still experiencing a very tiny taste of how hard it was for slaves to gain safe passage on the Underground Railroad. Students’ experiences, via a day of learning how to avoid “the foes” at school, will surely be something they won’t soon forget.

The Hampton Bays Underground Railroad premise was easy: in order to be “set free,” the students needed to gather seven “friend” signatures before they were caught by/received three “foes” signatures.

The dozen or so “friends” (teachers and administrators assigned by Ms. Crowley) were marked with a burning candle in their windows or on their doors—similar to the types of safe haven symbols and clues left back in the days of the real Underground Railroad.

Additionally, there were approximately five “foes” patrolling the hallways--sometimes staked right outside the “friends” rooms--who were just waiting to catch those on their journey to freedom.

At the end of the Underground Railroad re-creation, those who had received the requisite seven “friends” signatures were freed, but those who were first caught by three “foes” remained enslaved.

Outgoing District Superintendent Joanne Loewenthal also addressed the students. “You represent character, service and a lot of hard work. We are proud of you.”

Middle School Principal Lars Clemensen, who will replace Ms. Loewenthal soon, remarked that he and each of the 33 Junior Honor Society members were on a journey. “In 18 days, we will all move up to the Hampton Bays High School together,” he said, referencing his upcoming move to become the District Superintendent. “You have created new traditions, new rules and new expectations. The High School Symphonic Band, led by Instrumental Director Jennifer Halsey, kicked off the evening by playing four selections from Robert Smith’s “Don Quixote: Symphony No. 3.” Arrangements of “The Quest,” “Dulcinea,” “Sancho and the Windmills” and “The Illumination” were performed. Additionally, Hampton Bays alum Tommy Pandolfo returned to perform with the band and chorus on Wednesday.

After the band presentation, band member Ryan Holzman jammed out some terrific blues guitar as the chorus prepared to take the stage.

The weather surely cooperated, and the people showed up in droves for the daylong “Hampton Bays Community Pride Day” celebration on Saturday, May 15.

This was the third year running for the annual event, which began as a marker for the district’s centennial celebration on May 17, 2008. This year, more than 300 people were in attendance.

Live music, food, games for the kids—including bouncy slides and “jousting” with giant inflatable tubes—a 5K race, vendors and a dunk tank manned by Hampton Bays administrators were all enjoyed from the morning through the afternoon.

Local restaurants, including Oakland’s, which served up delicious crab cake sandwiches and chowder, and Scotto’s Pork Store, which satisfied appetites with steaming hot pizza slices and assorted sandwiches, were also on hand. Various Hampton Bays school groups and merchants also set up displays for the event. And Last Chance Animal Rescue Fund brought along several adoptable pets.

Many runners also turned out for the third annual “Hampton Bays 5K,” which was held in the morning before the event.

April Students of the Month Honored at Hampton Bays

Three students, one from each school in the district, received April “Student of the Month” honors during the Hampton Bays School Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, May 11, 2010.

Second-grader Tristan Halsey, seventh grader Sarah Jiudice and senior Marcus Shams each received a plaque and high praise from their respective principals on Tuesday night.

Tristan Halsey “is a very special young man,” Elementary School Principal Marc Meyer reported as he handed Tristan his “Student of the Month” plaque. Mr. Meyer was accompanied by three of Tristan’s teachers, who all agreed that the second grader displays outstanding citizenship. According to the principal, Tristan, who aspires to be an architect when he grows up, is also an excellent role model for other students and is a terrific older brother to boot.
Sarah Jiudice’s teachers, according to Middle School Principal Lars Clemensen, unanimously nominated her for “Student of the Month” honors. He added that Sarah is a natural leader who is respected by her fellow students. Earlier this year, she spearheaded an effort to sew and donate pillows for orphans in Haiti. Her next project is to implement ways to make the district greener, including replacing Styrofoam lunch trays with more sustainable replacements next year. Sarah is also a student athlete who participates in softball, volleyball, basketball, soccer, and choir, and is a Presidential Honor Student.

Marcus Shams, the Class of 2010 salutatorian, is an all-around accomplished student leader, according to High School Principal Chris Richardt. The principal added that Marcus was nominated by his health and physical education teachers, who had discovered that in spite of his many accomplishments, he had never been “Student of the Month.” “They said, ‘there’s no way he’s getting out of here without this plaque,’” Mr. Richardt joked as he gave Marcus his award. Prior to receiving his honor on Tuesday, the dedicated student reported that he had taken five AP exams in a week’s time. After graduation, Marcus will head off to Northern Arizona University next fall.

Creating Comfort

Students in Barbara Bickford’s seventh-grade Home and Careers class at Hampton Bays Middle School recently completed a Service Learning project together with their teacher intern, Ms. Mitchell. The students created 45 pillows in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes for children in Haiti who are now living in an orphanage due to the devastating earthquake earlier this year. “Each student learned the basics of clothing construction, textiles, andhow to create a production line with quality control. Pillows were chosen for comfort, construction, and ‘cuddle power,’” said Mrs. Bickford.

In addition to the pillows, students created cards for the children expressing the care and concern of students from afar.
“On the final day of this project the students developed a closer understanding of the purpose of their service when Ms. Samantha, a resident of Haiti, visited our classroom,” continued Mrs. Bickford. “She shared with our students the love of her homeland, everyday language sayings, basic geography, and an insight to the customs and culture of this small island community.”
Following the presentation of the pillows, a few classic Haitian recipes were enjoyed by all.

Class of 2014 Goes to Washington

The Hampton Bays Middle School Class of 2014 recently traveled to Washington, DC, for the second annual 8th grade class trip. While there, the class met with their Congressman, Tim Bishop, before taking a tour of the Capitol. In addition, what the students have been learning in Social Studies came off the pages of the textbook when they visited the Lincoln, World War II, Vietnam, Jefferson, and Korean War Memorials. Students particularly loved the Smithsonian Institutes, visiting Ford’s Theater, and laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
To commemorate this memorable experience, the Class of 2014 has chosen as its farewell gift to the Middle School three framed copies of the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and the Bill of Rights to be hung for all students to enjoy.

These documents were framed by art teacher Kathy Dayton. Thanks to the eighth graders for their participation on this great trip and to our 8th grade class advisors for coordinating the trip, Mrs. Beach and Ms. Dossiano.

Kelina’s teacher, Ms. Moran, also presented her student with a pink tulip on Tuesday night.

Kaylee Catena is “phenomenally well-rounded,” according to Middle School Principal Lars Clemensen. “She’s a leader who sets a positive and good example for other students,” he said, adding that Kaylee is known as the “silent warrior” in physical education class. Funds were raised in a variety of ways, including the Hampton Bays Idol contest, homecoming dance admission, the annual faculty basketball game, and Battle of the Classes events.

While at the conference, the students attended over 20 workshops on topics such as team building, decision making, fundraising and community service.

Hampton Bays Middle School Shows Spirit

Students and staff alike at Hampton Bays Middle School rocked the annual “Spirit Week” tradition again this year during the week of March 22 through March 26.
Sponsored by the Middle School Student Council, the schoolwide celebration included different “Theme Days” and culminated in a “Class Night” competition on Friday, March 26. Special themes included: Teacher Appreciation/Sports Day on Monday; Student Appreciation/College Day on Tuesday; Wacky Wednesday; Decade Day on Thursday; and Color Day on Friday.
Different days meant different things during “Spirit Week.” On Monday, teachers assigned points for students wearing sports jerseys or uniforms and also assigned creative tasks for students. On Tuesday, teachers were requested to not assign homework in recognition of Student Appreciation Day, and everyone was encouraged to wear their favorite college gear. Wacky Wednesday was the day for everyone to get crazy and dress as nutty as possible. On Decade Day, students and staff alike showed up in attire from their favorite decade (hint—the 1960s were back in a big way!). Friday was Color Day; sixth- and seventh-graders were asked to wear white and fifth- and eighth-graders were asked to wear purple.
But “Spirit Week” wasn’t just about crazy attire and fun themed days; proceeds collected during the week were also donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of a student who is a leukemia survivor.
Ballroom Dance-Off at Hampton Bays Elementary School

“Dancing with the Stars” celebrities surely would have been given a run for their money if they were to participate in a dance-off with Hampton Bays third- and fourth-graders on Friday, March 19. A total of 56 kids (28 couples) turned out to foxtrot, meringue and swing their hearts out at the Hampton Bays Elementary School gymnasium that night for the fifth annual “Ballroom Dancing Competition.”

The students, who partnered up with classmates for the event, had previously learned the steps to each dance during a two-week course in physical education classes, according to teacher Frank Mancuso. During the competition, which was narrowed down to three winning couples for each grade, the kids boogied down to a variety of Latin dance songs and contemporary favorites such as Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” The kids also paired up with their parents and older siblings for a special foxtrot.

Hailey Troyan and Antonio Scotto took first place honors for the third grade, Reilly Tupper and Joey Sapio earned second place and Jermaine Crosby and Skylar Dorchak came in third. For the fourth grade, Amber Reyes and Byron Daun won first place, Natasha Valentin and Daniel Dimijian came in second and Collette Levine and Sean Donohue nabbed third place distinction.

According to Mr. Mancuso, the dance training gives kids life lessons that they can’t learn about from books. “It gives special growth you just can’t teach,” he said. “And the kids really seem to love it.” Arthur Murray dance instructor Victor Holguin assisted Mr. Mancuso in judging duties.

Middle Schoolers Are Jazz Inspired

Students at Hampton Bays Middle School celebrated national “Music in Our Schools Month” in March with a variety of “Origins of American Jazz: Rhythm, Music and Dance” events, including: instruction, dance, mural painting and a concert with professional musicians.

The culmination of the month-long immersion in jazz was a concert given by the Rhythm Kings Ensemble at the middle school cafetorium on Wednesday, March 24. During the concert, professional musicians James Shipp, Daisy Shumake-Taylor, Misha Tsygenou, Paul Ramsey and Napoleon Revels-Bey welcomed students and staff to accompany them on stage. First up was teacher Kevin Heathwood, who played trumpet during a Dizzy Gillespie song.

Additionally, Hampton Bays Middle School art class students collaborated with teacher Kathy Dayton and Artist-in-Residence John DiNaro to create a mural celebrating the history of modern American jazz. The artwork was hung on Wednesday, March 24, in the music wing of the school.

Other jazz-focused activities throughout the month of March included researching the origins of jazz in America; interactive workshops and performances on the concepts of form, listening, rhythm beat, harmony, improvisation and repertoire; and dance instruction on meringue, flamenco, cha-cha-cha and rumba.

“Origins of American Jazz” programs were made possible with the support of the New York State Council for the Arts, the East End Arts Council, BOCES, the Hampton Bays Middle School PTO and the Hampton Bays Union Free School District.

Students Perform at Disney World

Members of the Hampton Bays High School Band and Chorus received the opportunity of a lifetime during midwinter recess in February when they played at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.

The band and chorus were invited to perform at Walt Disney World after completing a “Disney Magic Days” application and sending along taped audition performances. After making the grade, the band and chorus played “The Winners Circle” in formal black clothes and also in Hampton Bays’ signature purple robes.

As performers at the famous American resort, and home of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, the 105 student band and chorus members were deemed “honorary Disney cast members,” according to Hampton Bays High School Band Director Jenn Halsey. She added that all of the students and each of the 12 chaperones in attendance thoroughly enjoyed their trip to “the greatest place on Earth.”

February Students of the Month Honored

Three students, one from each school in the district, received February “Student of the Month” honors during the Hampton Bays School Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, March 9.

Fourth grader Oscar Mora, eighth-grader Maria Daun and sophomore Anthony Romagnoli each received a plaque and commendations from their respective principals, and vice principal in Anthony’s case.

According to Elementary School Principal Marc Meyer, Oscar Mora is a great role model for other students. He is very competitive but also quick to help others. Oscar loves dodgeball and skateboarding, “but only while wearing his helmet at the skate park, never at the school,” Mr. Meyer reported that Oscar told him. When he grows up, Oscar said that he wants to be a policeman.

Maria Daun “never shies away from a challenge,” according to Middle School Principal Lars Clemensen. “She’s a role model, one of my favorite things to say about a student,” he said, adding that the honor roll and ACC Team member is also an avid art student and musician in the band. As an example of her serious commitment to overcoming challenges, Mr. Clemensen reported that Maria recently decided to switch to a new instrument, the bassoon, after she had mastered the alto sax.

Anthony Romagnoli is destined for great things, if his academic and extracurricular career thus far is a predictor of the future. He has a 96 unweighted average and has frequently earned Presidential honors, even while taking Advanced Placement courses, according to High School Assistant Principal Anthony DiBlasio. The busy student is involved in wrestling, cross country, plays saxophone in the band and is very close to completing his final project - building a training maze for the Hampton Bays Fire Department - to earn Eagle Scout distinction. Anthony’s goal post-graduation is to “serve others who are struggling,” Mr. DiBlasio said, “most likely as a Navy SEAL, serving in the Coast Guard, or working as a fireman.”

Renowned Storyteller Visits the Middle School

Hampton Bays Middle School students from grades 5 through 8 were captivated on Monday morning, March 27, by Heather Forest, an award-winning recording artist and children’s book author.

Ms. Forest--whose minstrel style of storytelling blends original music and song, spoken word, poetry and prose—has traveled the world over entertaining listeners for the past 30 years. During her presentation at Hampton Bays Middle School, she taught students about “creative listening” and “imaginal space and the world behind your eyes” while telling folktales and allegories, sometimes accompanying herself on guitar.

The purpose of Ms. Forest’s visit was to teach the students life lessons about cultural roots and values while enabling them to gain more advanced verbal and listening skills and further developing their imaginations. During four 45 minute-long sessions (a period for each grade level in the middle school), she did just that while engaging the audience with her unique storytelling abilities.

As a recording artist, Ms. Forest has completed eight storytelling albums, including: “Songspinner: Folktales and Fables Sung and Told”, “Sing Me A Story,” “Tales Around the Hear”, and “The Animals Could Talk,” among others. As an author, she has written numerous books, including “Wonder Tales from Around the World” and “Wisdom Tales from Around the World.”

January Students of the Month Honored

Three students, one from each school in the district, received January “Student of the Month” honors during the Hampton Bays School Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, February 9.
Kindergartener Jhon Salazar, eighth-grader Eric Downs and junior Pawel Golyski each received a plaque and commendations from their respective principals.
Jhon Salazar, who enjoys writing and playing on his Wii, is a converted New Orleans Saints fan (since they won the Super Bowl!), Mr. Meyer reported. But teacher Mary Beth Motz, who came to the meeting to sing Jhon’s praises, had many compliments for her young charge. “He’s got a lot of gusto and optimism,” Ms. Motz said. “Jhon is a very dynamic group leader and he has a fantastic outlook.”
Eric Downs is a seasoned “Student of the Month,” having been recognized as an elementary student. According to Mr. Clemensen, Eric, who enjoys science class the most and won a spot on the ACC Team, is a leader who received a unanimous nine votes for the award this time around. “He’s a pleasure in class and is a role model to other students,” he said, adding that Eric really likes “how everybody treats one another at the middle school.”
Pawel Golyski is “proof you can do it all,” Mr. Richardt proudly proclaimed. The busy student is on the Student Council, Thespian Society, a student athlete and is working toward earning Eagle Scout status. “We’re very proud of Pawel,” Mr. Richardt said.

Students Become Bucket Fillers

Students at Hampton Bays Elementary School learned valuable life lessons in character education through the “Bucket Fillers” program on Monday, March 1.
During her visit to Hampton Bays, Faith Smith, the Bucket Fillers for Life Team Director for New York, imparted some of her wisdom to the students via two large assemblies. Topics covered in the one-hour program included kindness, respect and anti-bullying.
Through the “Bucket Fillers” program, the kids at Hampton Bays Elementary learned positive ways to treat each other as well as ways to improve the school climate, according to Hampton Bays Elementary School Principal Marc Meyer.
“This was a great message for all the students on how they should treat each other and a great way to improve our school climate,” Mr. Meyer said on Monday afternoon. “We really appreciated our PTA sponsors and the bucket filler program.”
During the program, the students listened to “Bucket Filler” stories, sang the “Bucket Filler” song and took the “Bucket Filler” pledge: “I promise to be a Bucket Filler in my school life with my teachers and my classmates, and I promise to be a Bucket Filler in my family life with all my loved ones.”
Started in 2003 by Merrill “The Bucket Man” Lundgren, “Bucket Fillers” workshops on “choosing to live with a warm and caring heart” have been taught at hundreds of schools across the country.

100 Days and Counting

Hampton Bays second graders (and a select kindergarten class) exhibited boundless creativity in constructing their “100 Day” art projects this year.
The age-old tradition, 20-plus years in the making, of celebrating the 100th day of school (Thursday, February 25), was a monster hit with the innovative students in each Hampton Bays Elementary School second-grade class.
Using 100 pieces of any item, the children constructed a variety of clever art projects, including: a hot air balloon made of balloons, several houses and a ship made of Popsicle sticks, a stage with 100 dance pose pictures, a tiara made of marbles, a tree made of flags, and much more. The children’s hard work is now on display in the front entrance hallway at the elementary school.
Kindergarteners in Ms. Dargan’s class also got into the “100 Day” spirit this year. The children used a variety of objects—including cereal, pennies, cups and macaroni—to complete their projects. Throughout the day Ms. Dargan rewarded her students with oversized $100 bills in play money, which they kept and tallied up to determine who earned the most for “100 Day.”

Fifth-Graders Learn About Train Track Safety

Metropolitan Transit Authority Police Officer John J. Matarazzo visited Hampton Bays Middle School to teach students about train safety. During his visit, the policeman, who is an MTA officer for the Long Island Rail Road, shared some of his experiences in the line of duty. He also showed a video, “Off Limits,” about track safety and gave out “Operation Lifesaver” rulers and pens.

Several dangerous and often fatal scenarios were re-enacted in the video, including a girl wearing headphones while walking along the train tracks, a hunter stalking his prey while on the tracks, children whose mini-bike got stuck on the tracks and older teenagers drinking and passing out on the tracks.

During Officer Matarazzo’s presentation, the students learned that crossing, except in specifically designated areas, or loitering on tracks is illegal and dangerous. They were also shown photos of the damage a train can do to a car and a semi-tractor trailer, while learning that trains on Long Island can travel at speeds up to nearly 80 miles-per-hour.

Students learned bout the third rail on subway lines, and train tracks on part of the Island, and what to do if they ever drop anything on those tracks (call for a policeman). Officer Matarazzo also informed the students that there are approximately 20 and 30 fatalities a year involving “person versus train” on Long Island.

Hampton Bays ESL Students Celebrate Heritage

Students involved in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Hampton Bays Elementary School celebrated their heritage with each other and their families with the sixth annual “Bilingual/ESL Dinner” on Thursday, January 21.

Approximately 100 children and their family members turned out for the dinner, many of them bringing traditional dishes from their countries of origin, including taquitos, empanadas, arroz con pollo and pizza.

There are approximately 180 children who are either bilingual or who receive ESL services at the elementary school. The countries represented by these students are from all points of the globe: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Ecuador, Guatemala, Lithuania, Mexico, Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Ukraine and Africa. Non-English languages spoken include Spanish, Polish, Lithuanian, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Turkish and French.

In addition to sharing a meal together, families in attendance were entertained by the St. Cecilia Band and also learned about different programs to help them adjust to life on the East End. Resources and information packets on the New York State English as a Second Language Assessment test, parent tips and reading programs were handed out to all.

Hampton Bays “Holidays Around the World”

The first graders at Hampton Bays Elementary School celebrated the holidays in high style by preparing foods from around the world. The cosmopolitan fare was prepared at home by the students (with a little help from the adults in each household) and then brought in to the school for all to enjoy.

For the celebration, each of the seven first-grade classes was assigned a world destination and given instruction on the types of foods enjoyed there. The areas of the world represented included Israel, Australia, Mexico, Italy, Ireland, Sweden and Germany.

In addition to cooking different indigenous region-themed foods, the children also created costumes to dress up according to their individual class themes. And parents and students alike were able to partake of the delicious “Holidays Around the World” cuisine.

Though the concept of “Holidays Around the World” originated nearly a decade ago at the school, with specific countries being represented, today the “country” theme is broader and includes the continent of Australia so as not to leave a particular part of the world out, according to first grade teacher Ms. Hutchison. “The kids really love it and we all have a good time,” she said.

High School Winter Play?

The Hampton Bays community was treated to a special holiday performance as students from the High School staged their production of Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas.”

The musical production starred juniors Jesse Eaton as Bob Wallace, Rachel Reed playing Betty Haynes, Pawel Golyski depicting Phil Davis and Deborah Carlin as Judy Haynes, plus a whole cast of Hampton Bays student characters.

“White Christmas” has been both a successful Broadway musical and a 1954 motion picture, which starred Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney and Danny Kaye. The play, which tells the story of two World War II army buddies who eventually make it big on Broadway, includes such musical numbers as “White Christmas,” “It’s Cold Outside” and “Blue Skies.”

Tommy Pandolfo Named National Merit Semifinalist?

The Hampton Bays School District is proud to recognize Tommy Pandolfo, a senior at Hampton Bays High School, who was recently announced as a Semifinalist in this year’s National Merit Scholarship Program. Tommy was congratulated and commended for his academic achievements and presented with the opportunity to continue in the competition against 16,000 other talented high school seniors for some 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, totaling $33 million.
In order to advance to the final level the students need to complete several steps. The semifinalists must each present an academic record of advanced performance, supply an exceptional recommendation from their high school principal, earn SAT scores to support their earlier testing performances, and submit a detailed scholarship application, including an individual essay and information regarding the applicant’s academic and community activities.
Congratulations, Tommy.
