Hampton Bays High School students have busy lives, but not too busy to make time to teach their younger counterparts at the Hampton Bays Elementary School about the world of reading.
Each Thursday, for a six-week period, a group of high school students visits the Hampton Bays first-grade classrooms for live storytime reading. According to the first-grade teachers, the kids really look forward to the visit and ask all day if the older students are coming to read.
“They really love it,” first-grade teacher Janis Poremba said.
The weekly visits serve many purposes: they reinforce a connection between the students in the community; they provide mentoring opportunities; and they emphasize the importance of reading and learning for both groups of students.
