U.S. Navy veteran Esmond “Pete” Penny was the honoree at the May 23 flag ceremony at Hampton Bays Elementary School.
The lifelong Hampton Bays resident and his wife, Ruth, recently celebrated their 64th anniversary. The former Motor Machinist First Class co-hosts the monthly Hampton Bays Veterans Breakfast at the American Legion Hand-Aldrich Post 924.
“In big ways and small ways, we thank our veterans,” said District Superintendent Lars Clemensen during the moving ceremony. “We are proud to honor their service to their country and to Hampton Bays.”

Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst presented Mr. Penny with a proclamation that designated May 23 as Esmond “Pete” Penny Day. “He’s a man who is truly worthy of today’s honor,” she said.

During the ceremony, Class of 2021 members Alexander Chabla, Tara Lauther and Jacob Tuttle led the Pledge of Allegiance and read from Mr. Penny’s biography. Class of 2018 members Julia Denig, Tabatha Fajardo and Alejandra Martinez sang the national anthem. Jacob also read from his “What Does Veterans Day Mean to Me?” essay.

Members of Mr. Penny’s family, as well as representatives from the American Legion Hand-Aldrich Post 924 and VFW Post 5350, were also in attendance.
