January Students of the Month were recognized during the Hampton Bays Board of Education meeting at the high school on Tuesday, February 14.

Three students, one from the elementary school, one from the middle school and one from the high school, received plaques and words of commendation from their respective principals during the meeting. Kindergartener Emily Malone, eighth grader Elizabeth Garnett and junior Tyler McDonald were each recognized for their exemplary scholarship and leadership.

Emily was nominated for Student of the Month by her teacher, Ms. Foster, who reported to Hampton Bays Elementary School Principal Marc Meyer that Emily is a very special student. Emily is a standout, particularly in the areas of math, technology and citizenship. Mr. Meyer said that Ms. Foster was very impressed with Emily for being such a great student, but she was even more impressed by the way Emily treats her classmates.

This is the first school year at Hampton Bays for Elizabeth, and she has already become a student leader, according to Hampton Bays Middle School Principal Dennis Schug. She is an academic student who is constantly striving to improve on her best efforts, he said, adding that Elizabeth’s favorite subject is social studies. The cheerleader and SADD member is planning on attending college and studying writing and editing. Her advice for others, according to Mr. Schug, is “Be yourself and do your best.”

Tyler, an honor student currently carrying three AP classes, has his sights on becoming a college history professor, according to Hampton Bays High School Principal Christopher Richardt. In addition to his studies, Tyler is on the varsity baseball team and is a big Yankees fan. His science teacher, Ralph Hubbard, gave high praise to Mr. Richardt about Tyler: “He’s respectful and never cuts the lunch line,” Mr. Richardt said with a smile.
