National Junior Honor Society
-
The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is the nation's premier organization that recognizes outstanding middle school students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. The standards for selection are established by the National Junior Honor Society of the United States and by the Hampton Bays Middle School chapter bylaws. Participation in NJHS is by selection process.
NJHS applications will be distributed to qualified 7th and 8th grade students at the beginning of each school year.
In order to qualify, students must maintain a 92 cumulative GPA average for 6th and 7th grade. It is also recommended that students receive a letter of recommendation from a community member and complete at least 5 hours of community service before applying.

Selection of Candidates
Step 1: To be eligible for membership the candidate must be enrolled as a member of the seventh or eighth grade at Hampton Bays Middle School.
Step 2: Candidates must have a cumulative weighted grade point average of 92 for the four consecutive quarters prior to their application. To be eligible for selection the candidate must have been in attendance at Hampton Bays Middle School for a period of two quarters.
Step 3: Candidates will be provided an application packet with sections to fill out regarding their involvement in clubs/organizations pertaining to service, leadership, character, and citizenship. It is highly recommended that applicants complete at least five hours of community service before applying to NJHS.
In addition to their application packet, candidates’ behavior and disciplinary record will also be reviewed by the Faculty Council.
Step 4: The selection of members to this chapter shall be by a majority vote of the Faculty Council, which consists of five faculty members appointed by the principal. The chapter adviser shall be the sixth, nonvoting, ex officio member of the Faculty Council.
Step 5: Students will be notified of the Faculty Council’s decision no more than four weeks after the application deadline.
Appealing a Faculty Council Decision (for eligible applicants)
Non-selected applicants or dismissed students may appeal the faculty council decision within 14 days of receiving their notification.
To appeal, the student must write an essay (one page, double-spaced) that addresses the deficiency in their original application (or the reason for their dismissal), and explains why they want to be an NJHS member. The essay, along with the appeal request, should be submitted to the building principal via email.
Appeals will result in one of three decisions:
-
The initial decision of the Faculty Council is upheld.
-
The initial decision of the Faculty Council is overturned, and the student is approved for the winter induction ceremony.
-
The initial decision of the Faculty Council is tabled. In this instance, the applicant will be given a series of mandatory guidelines by the building principal and Faculty Council, and their application will be reconsidered during the fourth quarter of the school year. If the required stipulations are met, the student may be approved for a spring induction at a Board of Education meeting.
The faculty council and building principal will review the original application and the appellate essay, and the building principal will notify the student of their final decision within 14 days of receiving the essay. As outlined in the NJHS chapter bylaws and National Constitution, the building principal’s decision is final.
Academic Dismissal
Member’s GPA has fallen below the 92 requirement.
Step 1: Student is given a first warning during the Progress Report window, if their weighted GPA is below 92.
Step 2: If a student's weighted GPA is still below 92 at the end of the quarter, they will be put on membership probation and given a second warning.
Step 3: If a student's weighted GPA is still below 92 at the next Progress Report window, they will be given a third warning.
Step 4: If a student's weighted GPA is still below 92 at the end of the following quarter (15 weeks after warning #1), their case will go before the faculty council for a dismissal hearing.
-
The council will vote on dismissal. A majority vote will decide the outcome of the dismissal hearing.
**A student may appeal a dismissal decision by following the same process for nonselection appeals.
