For an impressive scientific experiment that she conducted, Hampton Bays High School senior Allison Sequeira was named a finalist in the IACS Women in Science Challenge at Stony Brook University. As a finalist, she gave a three-minute presentation on her experiment before a panel on Feb. 7.

Sequeira was one of 10 students to earn the honor to present out of a field of over 100. Her experiment involved imitating a volcanic reaction.

“I am very interested in the environment,” said Sequeira. “I thought this experiment was a great way to further my knowledge.”

Along with her work for the science challenge, Sequeira can be found competing with her school’s mock trial and Science Olympiad teams. She also serves as a member of her school’s Wellness and LEO clubs and is a member of the National Science Honor Society. She intends to study environmental science at college in the fall.

“Allison's placement in the Women in Science competition is a great achievement,” said science teacher Christina Facini. “This competition showcased her love of all science content areas and her willingness to pursue greater knowledge in unfamiliar areas.”
